How to Choose a Wall Clock Size and Style for Any Room

A wall clock is one of the few decor pieces that has a job. It has to be readable, quiet and in the right spot. Here is how to choose one that works in the room you have.

Start with where it will hang

Pick the wall before the clock. The best spots are above a doorway, over a console or desk, or on a wall you face often, like the one across from a sofa. Avoid placing it directly over a bright window, where glare makes the dial hard to read.

Think about reading distance

A clock you check from across a room needs a bold dial with strong contrast. A clock you check from a desk can be more decorative. Our 10 inch clocks are sized as accent pieces: easy to read from a normal room distance, and small enough to sit alongside frames or shelves.

Pick the style by room

Check the movement

If you sleep or work near the clock, a silent sweep movement is worth having. Our clocks use a quartz silent sweep mechanism, so the second hand moves smoothly without a tick. They run on one AA battery, which is not included.

Hang it right

Hang the clock so its center sits at about eye level for the main viewing position. If you are grouping it with other pieces, keep the clock as the largest or the most central item. Our guide on hanging wall decor straight and even covers measuring and marking.
