Light Boxes vs Framed Prints from Target and IKEA: Our Take

A framed print from Target or IKEA is the safe choice for a wall. In our opinion, a lit, double-sided light box adds more depth and glow, especially in a dark room. This is an opinion piece from the Dynasty Details point of view, and we try to be fair to framed art below.

What framed prints do well

Target is a good place for overall value. It carries framed art, ceramic vases, lamps and shelf decor, and many accents run about $10 to $60. IKEA is a good pick for a tight budget, with simple picture frames and vases that typically run about $5 to $40.

Framed art needs no power, no cord and no outlet. It also works with almost any style, from traditional to modern. If you want a quiet piece that blends in, a frame is hard to beat.

Where we think a light box does more

A framed print looks the same at noon and at midnight. A light box changes after dark: the artwork glows from within, and the light fills the space around it. In a den, bar, garage or game room with the overhead lights off, we think that glow does more for the room than a flat print.

Our round light boxes are also double-sided, so the design is visible from both directions. A standard frame shows one face to one side.

You can see them all in the Light Boxes collection. We describe them as ready to use out of the box: plug one in and it lights up.

Honest trade-offs

  • Power. Our light boxes run on USB, so you need an outlet, adapter or power bank nearby. A frame needs nothing.
  • Size. The round boxes are about 8.8 inches across. They suit a cluster or a small wall, not a sofa-wide space. For a large wall, a big print or an LED sign may fit better.
  • Subject. Our light boxes feature brand and vintage designs. If you want abstract art or a landscape, a framed print is the better fit.
  • Price. The light boxes above run $44 to $66. Framed art at the budget end can cost less.

How to choose

Pick a framed print if you want something quiet, flexible and low cost. Pick a light box if the room is often dim and you want one piece to act as a glowing accent. Many people do both: a frame for the main wall and a light box in a corner.

Frequently asked questions

Is a light box better than a framed print?

It depends on the room. We think a light box is better in a dark room where you want glow and depth. A framed print is better when you want a quiet, no-power option.

How are your light boxes powered?

The light boxes listed above run on USB power. The round and hanging boxes list plug-and-play USB power on their product pages.

Can I see a light box from both sides?

The round light boxes and the Jack Daniel's hanging light box are listed as double-sided and visible from both directions.
