Retro Movie Room Ideas: A Blockbuster Sign, a Light Box and an Amp Speaker Stand

A retro movie room does not need a projector wall or a full theater setup. A few well-chosen pieces with a nostalgic look can make a basement corner, spare room or game room feel like a place you want to hang out. Here is a simple plan built from three items in our shop.

1. Start with the Sign: Blockbuster Light-Up Sign

The Blockbuster Light-Up Sign is $40 and shows the ticket logo in royal blue and yellow lettering. It is made for movie rooms and game rooms, and it works on a shelf or a wall. Put it where you see it when you walk in so it sets the tone for the room.

2. Add a Second Glow: Retro Red & White Light Box

The Retro Red & White Light Box is $50, about 10 inches wide and powered by USB. It has bright, even light and a clean, minimal design that suits bars, lounges, garages and desks. Red and blue make a strong pair, so keep the two lit pieces apart rather than stacking them together.

3. Put Sound on the Shelf: Retro Amp Phone Speaker Stand

The Retro Amp Phone Speaker Stand is $35. It is a passive acoustic sound chamber with a retro amp design, so you drop your phone in and the sound gets louder and fuller. It needs no batteries, Bluetooth or charging, and it fits most smartphones. It is handy for playing a soundtrack or a trailer while you set up the room.

Layout Tips

  1. Choose one wall as the lit wall and keep the rest of the room calmer.
  2. Place the two lit pieces at different heights so the eye moves across the room.
  3. Put the amp stand on a side table or shelf within reach of the seating.
  4. Keep cords tidy, since the lit pieces use USB power.

Make It Feel Collected

Add a tic tac toe board or a small stack of games to the coffee table so the room invites you to stay. See our guide to choosing a coffee table game that doubles as decor for ideas.
