Vetting Etsy Sellers vs Shopping a Curated Store: A Practical Checklist
Share
Before you buy from an Etsy seller, check four things: process videos, workshop photos, original product photography and reviews with customer images. If those line up, you can buy with more confidence. In our opinion, the same questions are quicker to answer in a store that puts details on every product page. Here is the checklist and how we think the two approaches compare.
Why vet at all?
Etsy is a marketplace of independent shops, and it is a good source of handmade pottery, original art and one-of-a-kind pieces, usually priced from about $20 to $100 or more. Many sellers do wonderful work. Because each shop is separate, though, you decide which ones to trust. A few minutes of checking helps you spend well, especially on pieces at the higher end of that range.
None of these checks is a guarantee on its own. Together, they give you a fuller picture, so look for several signals rather than relying on one.
The Etsy vetting checklist
1. Look for process videos
A short video of a piece being thrown, carved, painted or assembled is strong evidence that the seller makes the item. Look for continuous footage rather than a single polished clip.
2. Look for workshop photos
Photos of a real workspace with tools, materials and works in progress help you see how the item is made. They also tell you whether the shop is a one-person studio or a larger operation.
3. Check for original product photography
Original photos show the actual item from several angles, often with a size reference. You can also run a reverse-image search on a photo. If the same image appears across many unrelated shops, ask the seller about it.
4. Read reviews with customer images
Reviews that include customer photos show what arrives at the door, in normal lighting. Compare those photos with the listing photos.
5. Read the shop policies
Check processing time, where the item ships from and who pays for returns. If something is unclear, message the seller before you order.
How the same checks work in a curated store
Dynasty Details is a small, curated catalog, and we think that changes the work involved. The goal of each check is the same: know what you are buying. Here is how we see the comparison.
- Know the item. Instead of searching for proof of process, you read the product page. For example, the Spiral Lattice Decorative Bowl ($35) lists a width of approximately 8.7 inches (220 mm) and states that it is for decorative use only.
- Know the size. The Ribbed Pedestal Tray lists three sizes and prices: 6.9 inches ($35), 7.9 inches ($45) and 9.8 inches ($60).
- Know the power and use. The Retro Red & White Light Box ($50) is USB powered and about 10 inches wide.
- Know the shipping. One policy covers the whole store. Every order ships from Atlanta, GA, and most orders ship within 1 to 3 business days.
We are not saying a store replaces handmade work. Our products are not described as handmade, so a process video is not the right test for them. The test that fits is simpler: does the page tell you the size, price and specs before you buy? You can judge that in seconds.
Where each approach fits
- Pick Etsy when the maker is part of what you are buying. Use the checklist above.
- Pick a curated store when you want consistent pages and a single shipping policy across several items.
- Combine them. One handmade piece plus a few reliably described accents is an easy way to style a shelf.

FAQ
What is the single most useful Etsy check?
Reviews with customer images are a good starting point, because they show the item as buyers received it. Pair them with original product photos and a look at the shop policies.
Do I need process videos for every purchase?
No. They matter most when a seller says an item is handmade and you are paying a premium for that. For simple accents, clear photos, sizes and reviews may be enough.
Can I message a seller before I buy?
Yes. Asking about materials, size, processing time and shipping origin is reasonable. A clear, prompt answer is a good sign.
