How to Style a Mantel or Fireplace Ledge with Vases, a Bowl and a Clock

A mantel is one of the first things people notice in a living room, and it is also one of the easiest places to overdo. The trick is to work in layers and leave breathing room. Here is a simple formula using pieces from our shop.

Start with the anchor

Choose one larger item to set the tone. A wall clock above the mantel works well, and our clocks are all 10 inches across. Add height with vases

The Ribbed Vase Set of 3 comes in heights of 4, 6 and 8 inches and is sold as a set. Splitting them lets you create a rhythm across the ledge: one on the left, one in the middle, one on the right. For a single taller piece, the Ribbed Bottle Vase comes in Cream or Sage Green, in a large size of 8.7" tall. Dried or faux stems add movement. These are for decorative use only.

Ground it with a bowl

The Spiral Lattice Decorative Bowl is about 8.7 inches wide in matte black. It is open weave, so it adds texture without blocking the view of items behind it. A bowl gives the eye a place to rest between taller objects.

Use the rule of three

  • Pick three heights: tall, medium and low.
  • Pick three textures: ribbed, open weave and a smooth dial.
  • Leave at least a hand's width between items so each one reads clearly.

Check the scale

Keep it flexible
