LED Neon Sign vs Light Box: Which One Fits Your Space?

Both an LED neon sign and a light box add a glow to a room, but they look and behave differently. If you are choosing between them for a garage, desk or game room, here is a plain breakdown of each and when each makes sense.

What a light box is

A light box shows a logo or design lit from behind. It is built to be ready to use out of the box, and most plug in by USB, so you can power one from a wall adapter, a power bank or a computer. At Dynasty Details, the range includes these:

  • Round double-sided light boxes, about 224 mm (8.8") across and about 50 mm (2") thick, visible from both directions, with wall-mount brackets included. Examples include Ford Motor Co., Harley-Davidson, Coca-Cola and Michelin.
  • A Porsche crest light box.
  • A Red Bull light box, 10" x 7", which stands on a desk or mounts on a wall.
  • A hanging Jack Daniel's light box, 185 x 243 mm, with wall arm and chains included.

You can browse them in the light box collection.

What an LED neon sign is

An LED neon sign is a lit design in the style of a classic neon sign. Ours are USB powered. The range includes Audi RS, BMW M, Toyota Supra and Nissan GT-R, plus a Lamborghini XL neon at 3.5 ft. They are all in the LED sign collection, which also lists the light boxes.

The main differences

  • Look: a light box is a contained piece with a lit logo. A neon sign is styled after classic neon signs.
  • Size: the round light boxes are compact and consistent. The neon signs can go larger, with the Lamborghini XL at 3.5 ft.
  • Placement: a light box can sit on a desk or hang on a wall, depending on the model. A round double-sided box is seen from both sides, which helps in an open space.
  • Feel: a light box is neat and graphic. A neon sign is bolder, more of a statement.

Which suits your space

Garage: either works. A big neon sign makes a strong focal point above a workbench, while a round light box suits a smaller wall section or a spot where you see it from both sides.

Desk: a light box is usually the easier fit, especially one that stands up, such as the Red Bull model. USB power also means a computer can run it.

Game room or man cave: a neon sign is a great anchor for the main wall, and a smaller light box can support it on another wall. Our guide to powering and placing USB light boxes covers the practical side.

A simple way to decide

  1. Pick the spot first and measure it.
  2. Decide whether you want a statement piece or a tidy accent.
  3. Check where the USB power source will be.
  4. Choose the brand or car you want to feature.

If you still cannot choose, you do not have to. Many rooms use one of each, with the neon leading and the light box playing a supporting role.
